The explosive comedy by Eleni Randou, based on Neil Simon's adaptation of Chekhov's short stories, is presented in the Iphigenia hall of the «Hellenic Cosmos» Cultural Centre. After the continuous sold out performances during the summer tour across Greece and the great success it had at the "Atrium" of the «Hellenic Cosmos», it continues for a second year in an impressive production by the company «Methexis» of Christos Tripodis from November 2nd.
A few words about the play:
Anton Chekhov sketches characters from both urban centers and the countryside of pre-revolutionary Russia, magnifying in a vivid yet sympathetic way their habits, obsessions, fears, their focus on self-interest, their naivety, as well as their cunning. On stage, typical figures of his era and society parade: from teachers and nannies to priests and dentists. All the heroes are presented, universal and timeless, for us to judge "yesterday," "today," and "tomorrow."
Eleni Randou titled her adaptation "Vodka Molotov," winking at the audience about the theatrical "explosion" of laughter and emotion they are about to experience. Her text is characterized by linguistic immediacy and sharp humor. Chekhov's characters, with all their flaws, mistakes, desires, and longings, will share with us their tears, their melancholic smiles, and their liberating laughter. In a time when different personalities, different views—whether ideological or national—opposing genders, races, or even political alignments, are treated with almost cannibalistic hostility, with sermons of hate and contempt, Chekhov's love for humanity and his humor can prove to be catalysts.
Nikorestis Chaniotakis directs a modern production with fast pace, vigor, inventiveness, and theatrical joy, featuring eight outstanding actors. On stage, we will also see Anton Chekhov himself, portrayed by Tasos Chalkias.
