Magic and Byzantium

The exhibition "Magic and Byzantium" was organized in the framework of the celebration of the European Heritage Days (24 to 26 September 2010), which this year was entitled "Wizards, spells and amulets: Magic in the ancient and Christian world". Byzantine man inherited the prejudices and superstitions of the ancient Hellenic world, as well as various “magical” habits of eastern people. At that era started the first systematic descriptions, with philosophical and theological considerations, and dividing lines were set between religion and magic, between science and divination. The exhibition, through the texts of Byzantine scholars, photographs and drawings of objects, opened a window so that the visitor can learn about the phenomenon of magic through the eyes of the people of that era. Its aim was for the visitor to have a wider image about the Byzantine world and to develop a critical view on the phenomenon of magic and not just learn some magic beliefs of the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Period.
The exhibition lasted from the 24th of September to the 31st of October 2010.
